THESE THINGS CAN KILL
I got this heartbreaking email today:
Sunday I had the very horrendous experience of watching my 6 month old Morgan (Collie/Pyr) die of strangulation from a no-slip collar. The other pup got her mouth caught in Morgan’s collar and twisted so many times I could not get a knife underneath in time to cut it off. Morgan died in my arms. These collars have not buckles in order to get them off if something like this happens - they are potential death traps. If not in play these collars could get caught on a kitchen cabinet knob and strangle your dog. PLEASE do not use these collars and let any dog owner you know about these collars. I will be talking to PetSmart this week and hopefully get them to stop selling them.

I had the same experience with this type of collar. My Greyhound was playing with our Akita and the Akita got her bottom jaw twisted in the collar and was sufficating our Greyhound. The Akita was screaming so loud in pain that we had neighbors from everywhere come out to try to help us. Fortunately we were able to grab a razor blade and cut the collar off of the Greyhound. We were advised to use these collars on our Greyhounds because a regular collar slips off their long necks. We now take the collars off the dogs when we leave because we fear this could happen when we are not home. I am sorry that this happened to you and your dog, and I understand that you could not get anything under the collar to cut it off because that is what we tried first. I suggest anyone using this collar have razor blades close by because that is the only item that will be able to work.

I had a similar experience with a regular collar that had a buckle and not a quick release. My two dogs were playing and the one twisted the collar in her mouth (as she jumped off the bed!) and began to choke the other dog. Thank god i was home when it happened or i would have a tragic ending as well. I now have only quick release collars and no one wears collars in the house anymore. Truely a bad day in our house but could’ve been much worse. Good to get the word out there.
